Examples of Arts and Crafts style furniture. |
The Arts and Crafts Movement was founded by William Morris in response to the Victorian Period. While the Victorian Period design style was very elaborate with an abundance of wall decorations, the Arts and Crafts style was more simplistic and naturalistic with wood being the most common material used. William Morris founded this simplistic style on the idea that you should, 'Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.'
There are eight major characteristics that define the Arts and Crafts era:
- Completely hand made
- Wood joints visible
- Based on Medieval designs
- Influenced by Shaker furniture
- Predominate wood oak
- Simple honest designs
- Large exposed hinges
- Very heavy furniture
